Southern Tibet's recent 6.8 magnitude earthquake is one of over 20 quakes above 6.0 since 1950, according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre. The quake's epicentre was in Dingri county, resulting in casualties. The cause is attributed to northward compression from the Indian Ocean plate and tectonic plate movements.
