A death in western Congo from hemorrhagic fever raises suspicion of a new virus alongside malaria in an outbreak killing over 100. Initial diagnoses suggested a respiratory illness, but the hemorrhagic fever case indicates a possible viral infection alongside malaria. The fatality occurred in Kwango province's Panzi area, where the outbreak is centered. Malaria is endemic, and malnutrition complicates diagnosis. Hemorrhagic fevers damage blood vessels, causing bleeding and various symptoms like fever and fatigue. Several viruses can cause them, spread through various means including mosquito bites.
